"Robbery-Homicide Detectives Respond to In-Custody Death"
 
Los Angeles – On Sunday, December 31, 2000, at approximately 6:55 a.m., Transit Division officers received a radio call, "415 man interfering with traffic, Manchester Avenue between Figueroa Street and Broadway." Officers responded to the location to search for the suspect. Subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect had jumped onto a moving vehicle, jumped off and was in the vicinity of 85th Street and Hoover Street. Officers responded to that location and observed the suspect standing on the southeast corner.
Officers attempted to handcuff the suspect when he became combative. The officers were able to restrain and handcuff the suspect. The suspect lost consciousness. The officers requested paramedics, via radio. Paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to Martin Luther King Drew Medical Center. The suspect was pronounced dead at 8:00 a.m.
The suspect was described as a male Black, 39 years old. His name will not be available pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation is being handled by Robbery-Homicide Division.
