"Victim Shot While Stopped at a Stop Sign"

Los Angeles – On Sunday, May 14, 2000, at approximately 9:55 am, Enrique Romero was driving westbound on 78th Street in his 1980 Pontiac when he stopped at the stop sign at 78th Street and Main Street. A vehicle described as a 1985 to 1988 Ford Mustang with possible primer spots, stopped along side Mr. Romero’s vehicle. The Mustang contained two or three male Hispanics and the passenger in the front seat, armed with a handgun, leaned out of the window and fired several rounds at Mr. Romero. Mr. Romero was struck two or three times in the upper torso. The suspects fled the scene in their vehicle. Mr. Romero drove his vehicle across Main Street and collided with a building on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The victim was treated at the scene and then transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. Mr. Romero remains in the hospital in extremely critical condition. The motive for the shooting has not been established.
