Los Angeles: Over the last several months, community leaders and representatives of the Los Angeles Police Department have gathered to discuss how relations between the police and community members can be improved. Under the auspices of the Los Angeles Human Relations Commission, community leaders, Chief of Police Bernard C. Parks and other City Department leaders gathered together in four separate forums to identify obstacles to forging better relationships. The focus of the forums has been on finding common ground in building a healthier police/community relationship.
The forum process will be completed on Friday, August 17, 2001, when participants, including Chief of Police Bernard C. Parks and the Executive Director of the Human Relations Commission, Mr. Joe Hicks, will meet to reach consensus on possible solutions to issues raised during the previous forums. The previous meetings have been conducted without fanfare, however, the media is encouraged to cover this important wrap up event.
The concluding forum will begin with a continental breakfast on Friday, August 17, 2001 at 8:30 a.m., and will conclude promptly at 12:15 p.m. Following the forum, Chief of Police Bernard C. Parks and Joe Hicks will hold a press conference to respond to media questions regarding forum conclusions. Additionally, community–based leaders will be available for media comments.
