Return to School Traffic Safety NA17147ml

August 15, 2017

On Tuesday August 15, 2017, students from Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will return for the 2017/2018 school year from summer vacation. To strengthen the relationship between the Los Angeles Police Department and community members, officers from Operations Central Bureau will visit 94 elementary schools, to ensure the safety of our students.

Officers will remain highly visible throughout the morning as students arrive to school. Officers will monitor pedestrian and vehicular traffic to ensure that all participants are safe and to further build public trust and confidence in Los Angeles Police Department. Officers will discuss traffic concerns, provide information fliers, and discuss the Safety Valet Program.

The LAPD would like to remind the public to take the following actions when in the proximity of schools:

•Slow down. Schools have a school zone speed (The Current Speed Limit is 25 MPH for a school zone), which was designed to safeguard students. A few extra minutes in your commute could safe a student’s life.

•Be alert. Many students are small in stature and are difficult to see while driving.

•Stop when approaching a bus with flashing red light lights and stop signal arm. This indicates a bus is loading or unloading students.

•Obey stop signs

•No double parking

•Avoid U-turns

•Use cross walks

•Be patient

Any questions regarding this matter may be referred to Sergeant Felicia McAdams, Central Traffic Division at (213) 833-3745.
