A native of the Los Angeles area, Commander David Doan was born and raised in Venice, California. He joined the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in 1974. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from National University.
As a patrol officer and detective, Commander Doan worked a variety of patrol and detective assignments, including narcotics. As a Sergeant, he worked as a patrol sergeant, assistant watch commander and a variety of staff assignments. Commander Doan was promoted to Lieutenant in 1986, and worked as watch commander in West Valley Area and a detective lieutenant in Northeast Area. As a senior lieutenant, he was assigned to Planning and Research Division. In October 1992, Commander Doan promoted to the rank of Captain and commanded Devonshire Patrol Division, North Hollywood Patrol Division, Detective Headquarters Division, Planning and Research Division and Pacific Area. After promoting to Commander in August of 1977, he has worked as the Department’s Employee Relations Administrator, the Department’s Risk Manager and as the Commanding Officer of Specialized Services Group in Detective Bureau, where he supervised Narcotics Division, and Gang and Operations Support Division. Commander Doan also led the development of the Department’s Risk Management Tracking System, TEAMS II.
Commander Doan is currently the Assistant Commanding Officer of Operations-Central Bureau, which oversees five geographic Areas (Central, Rampart, Hollenbeck, Northeast and Newton), as well as Central Traffic Division.
