The Detective Support Division (DSD) is responsible for investigating and prosecuting a number of different crimes such as on firearms control and threat management. Captain Greg Hall is the Commanding Officer. Detective Support Division is composed of the following nine units:


The Threat Management Unit is responsible for investigating all threats directed to the city’s elected officials and aggravated stalking cases on a citywide basis; maintaining liaison with identified entertainment industry studios within the city; investigating workplace violence involving City entities and employees; and serving as a standing resource for the City’s Threat Assessment Team, which manages workplace violence cases perceived to present a danger to City employees.


The Mental Evaluation Unit and Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team (SMART) work together assisting field officers with suspected mentally ill persons. They provide referrals, intervention and/or placement in mental facilities for individuals needing acute mental health intervention. The two entities have a partnership program with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.


The Hate Crime Unit primary responsibility is to collect, maintain, and disseminate statistics on all incidents motivated by hate or prejudice. The unit will analyze the data for identification of patterns, trends, modus operandi and responsible parties to assist the Department to respond appropriately. Provide hate crime education, prevention and enforcement where designated as part of the Annual Work Plan. In addition, the unit will coordinate and investigate an incident motivated by hate or prejudice as directed by the Deputy Chief, Detective Bureau.


The Court-on-Call, City and District Attorney Liaison Units act as liaisons to the City and District Attorney and file selected criminal cases. They are also responsible for monitoring all court "on-call" cases and subpoenaed court appearances.


The Missing Persons Unit conducts investigations of all reported missing adults on a citywide basis.


The Gun Unit investigates, arrests and assists in the prosecution of persons or businesses violating local, state or federal firearm laws. The Gun Unit processes Carry Concealed Firearm licenses, as well as analyzes legislation concerning firearms, makes stolen firearm notifications to other law enforcement agencies and participates in the Federal Youth Crime Gun Interdiction Initiative Program. The Gun Unit also conducts compliance inspections of all licensed firearm dealers in the City of Los Angeles to ensure they are operating within the law, and provides the public with a central location to obtain and disseminate firearm information. The Detective Information Desk acts as the Department’s information and advisory center during non-business hours, advises officers on matters related to bail enhancement, Probable Cause Determinations, Fugitive Warrants and Forgery cases. Additionally, the Unit monitors the Internal Affairs Group Complaint line during non-business hours and the LAWFULL toll free number for community members to report crimes or information on on-going criminal investigations.
