Vol. XI, No. 11

CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our new Chief of Police Charlie Beck.  He is a 32 year veteran who will bring his vast experience and knowledge to helm of the Department.  We wish Chief Beck much success in his tenure as Chief.

Recently, the Hollywood Area family suffered the loss of Police Officer III Edward Pandolfo who passed away due to health related issues.  Ed was a 21 year veteran of the Department as well as a naval officer in the United States Navy.  He served his country and the Department with honor and he will truly be missed.  He was most certainly one of the good guys.

Halloween 2009, in Hollywood was a tremendous success due to our great partnership with the community, resulting in no significant incidents related to crime and zero property damage!  Thank you to the community and our law enforcement partners.

On November 29th, the Hollywood Christmas Parade will take place.  This is a wonderful and traditional event for the Hollywood Community.  Please remember there will be several challenges with regards to getting around on foot or by vehicle.  Every effort will be made to keep major thoroughfares open unless public safety concerns create a different dynamic.

Hollywood Area crime statistics for the period covered from October 4, 2009 – October 31, 2009, showed that violent crime decreased 11 % and property crimes decreased 9%.  As the holiday season approaches, we will continue to concentrate our attention on violent crime with our foot beat and GED units to consistently improve the quality of life.

Thank you for your continued support.  Happy Thanksgiving!

All my best, Beatrice

BEATRICE M. GIRMALA, Captain
Commanding Officer
Hollywood Area

Crime Trends:
We are still having thefts in the night clubs and entertainment venues in Hollywood beware of where you leave your personnel property.   Do not leave your property unattended.  Always know where you leave your property.  If you need to get up have a friend watch your property or take it with you.  Also, please continue to be mindful to conceal items within your vehicles to lessen the chance that your vehicle may be burglarized.  And as is always the case, be mindful of your surroundings, coming and going from your vehicles.  Advance preparation towards keeping your properties secure and crime free (business and residential properties alike) during this busy time goes a long ways towards thwarting criminal activity.

The event that brings the most crowds and traffic to Hollywood Boulevard is on the way.  The Hollywood Christmas Parade is scheduled for Sunday, November 29, 2009.  Depending on the weather the crowds are estimated to be between five hundred thousand to one million.  With all of these people here to enjoy the parade it means a lot of cars on the streets.  If you don't take advantage of the public bus or train transportation, there will be plenty of parking in the lots north and south of Hollywood Boulevard if you come early.  Prior to the parade starting, several streets in the area will be closed to traffic and you won't be able to drive through.  Please come early, dress warm and enjoy the evening.  For more information you can visit the web site http://www.thehollywoodchristmasparade.com/

Car break-in's continue to be the most prevalent crime in the city.  I know you have heard this before, but please keep all items out of sight.  If the criminal doesn't see anything inside your car they will likely move on to the next.  Your trunk and glove compartment are two great places to store anything you can't of don't take with you.

The Hollywood Senior Lead Officers continue to work Homeless Outreach Details with the goal of assisting the homeless back in to the main stream of society.  We always have assistance and guidance from all of the local social service agencies.  If you are aware of any encampments where we may be able to help, please contact me.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding my area, please contact me on my cellular phone, 213-793-0710.  As always you can call the Hollywood Area Community Relations Office at 213-485-4316, or you can e-mail me at;22343@lapd.lacity.org

Serving the Central area of Hollywood from Seward to Sunset Blvd to Van Ness to Santa Monica Boulevard.

Because of the two new police divisions in the City, the boundaries have changed.  Some of the Hollywood area went to the new Olympic Division and a small portion was annexed to North Hollywood Division.  A quick glance at the map will insure you are aware of what basic car you belong to as well as your senior lead officer.

We need residential property and business owners to take a leadership role and immediately paint out the graffiti on their property as soon as they can.  This will let the individuals know that we are watching and will not tolerate continued graffiti in the area. We do have a group called the Hollywood Beautification Team (HBT) who assists with painting out graffiti in the Hollywood area.  The number to call if you have an area that needs to be painted out is 323-463-5180.  HBT does a great job with the lists of locations for graffiti to be painted out.

November 2009:
It's turkey time!  As we gear up for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season we all have to be aware of our surroundings.  A lot of people start to do their Christmas shopping early and the criminals know exactly when to strike.  Lock all your items in your trunk and do not leave any valuables inside the car, in plain view.  Be aware about who might be following you home or walking behind you to your car.  If you are aware, then your chances are much lower for being a victim.

I will be hosting a community cleanup on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 8:00 am.  Please come out and help clean the streets and sidewalks of our community.  If you are interested please give me a call for further information.

The annual Hollywood Christmas Parade is scheduled for Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 5:00 pm.  This should be a fun filled night, so bring your chairs and blankets.  Be aware of the street closures for that day by calling DOT in advance.

Continue to protect yourself and your property, don't be a victim.  Lock your windows and doors prior to leaving your home and make sure you don't leave anything inside your vehicle that is of any value. If you see anyone that looks suspicious in your neighborhood call the dispatch number (877-ASK-LAPD) and report the incident. You, the community members are our number one source for reporting any suspicious activity. So keep your eyes and ears open and help to protect your neighborhood.
