Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved-Shooting (OIS) that occurred in Northeast Division early Monday morning.

On May 21, 2018, around 12:03 a.m., Northeast Patrol Division uniformed officers were in the area of Figueroa Avenue and Avenue 52. The officers observed a Honda Civic and confirmed via their Mobile Digital Console that they were following a reported stolen vehicle. The suspects in that vehicle immediately sped away and the officers went in pursuit. While in pursuit, the officers observed the passenger expose his upper torso out of the passenger window while holding what appeared to be a shotgun. The suspect began to shoot at the officers, resulting in an OIS.

The pursuit terminated when the officers lost control of their police vehicle and collided with the curb at Avenue 50 and Aldama Street. A short distance from the traffic collision, the suspects’ vehicle and a loaded shotgun were recovered.

No officers were injured and one suspect was treated at a local hospital for a non-life threatening injury.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. Representatives from the Office of the Inspector General and Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division responded and monitored the investigation.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures.
