Los Angeles : On June 25, 2003, at about 7:30 p.m., Detective Abiel Barron was killed when his police vehicle was struck head on by a pickup truck that was trying to pass a big-rig truck on the wrong side of the highway. Detective Barron is survived by his wife, Ann Marie; daughter, Lauren; mother, Magda; brothers, Arnold and retired Sergeant Sam Barron and sister Magda.
Eulogies will be given by Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, President of the Los Angeles Police Commission Rick Caruso, California Department of Justice Attorney General Bill Lockyer, along with family and friends of Detective Barron.
Detective Barron was set to receive the LAPD’s Police Medal, the LAPD’s second highest award for distinguished bravery, for preventing a woman from leaping to her death on April 30, 2002. Chief Bratton will conclude his remarks by presenting the medal posthumously to Detective Barron’s widow Ann Marie.
The Services will be open to the public.
