LAPD Investigators and LA Media Assist LA County Sheriffs in Identification of Homicide Victim

July 6, 2001

Los Angeles – On Thursday, July 5, 2001, investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division, held a press conference at Parker Center, requesting the assistance of the media and the public in identifying a homicide victim. The victim was found dead on June 28, 2001, when a community member observed the body of the female in the Carob Tree Grove Picnic Area in Elysian Park. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
On July 6, 2001, investigators from the LA County Sheriffs Department saw a composite of the victim, provided by LAPD investigators, in the Los Angeles Times newspaper. The composite "jogged" the investigator’s memory on a case of a reported missing 13 year-old from the City of Whittier. The investigator contacted the coroner’s office and upon further investigation, identified the victim as a 13 year-old female who was reported missing to Pico Rivera Sheriffs, LA County, on May 2, 2001.
