Man Arrested after Assault on Police Officers

June 7, 2007

Los Angeles: A Los Angeles man was arrested Friday afternoon for assaulting police officers at a board and care home.

On June 1, 2007, around 5:00 p.m., Wilshire Area officers responded to a radio call of a violent man at 223 North Oxford Street. The suspect was attempting to obtain a knife from the kitchen to cut employees and acting violently toward the staff.

When officers arrived at the Oxford Villa Board and Care home, they encountered the suspect, later identified as Hawletu Meshesha, 35, in the kitchen. Meshesha attacked the officers. During the struggle, one officer’s badge was ripped from his uniform shirt. To subdue the suspect, police struck him several times with batons. Meshesha was ultimately taken into custody and placed under arrest for Felony Battery on a Police Officer.

Los Angles Fire Department Paramedics transported Meshesha to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was treated for abrasions and a puncture wound that were not related to this incident.

Police Officer III Anna Schube, 34, has been with the Department 11 years, and was treated at Orthopedic Hospital for a minor injury to the right arm. Police Officer III Matthew McNulty, 30, has been with the LAPD for seven years and was treated at Cedars Sinai Hospital for complaint of pain in the right arm.

Meshesha was booked at the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Jail facility due to his mental condition.

FID personnel responded to the scene and have assumed investigative responsibility.
