New Mobile Application Allows LAPD Cadets to Stay Connected NR14218ne

Los Angeles: – The Los Angeles Police Department Cadet Leadership Program has developed an exciting new social media outreach tool.  The mobile application was announced today at the Los Angeles Police Commission meeting.  It is the first LAPD application available to the public and is yet another recruitment strategy.  The application will provide details on how to join the Cadet Program, location of the nearest Cadet Posts, local news that affects Cadets, cadet achievements, links to online tutoring and college resources as well as photos of cadet activities and other events.

The LAPD Program is a dynamic youth-based enterprise and is the Department’s "signature" program for community youth.  The Cadet Program has a rich heritage of reaching students from all walks of life, guiding them towards academic excellence, leadership and enhancing their ability to live productive lives. .  The app was developed in collaboration with LAPD Pacific Division Officer Tony Newsom.

For nearly half a century, the LAPD Cadet Program has been resolute in its pledge to empower community youth and provide them with opportunities to learn, explore their personal talents and remain steadfast in their commitment to achieve – all in the pursuit of building a more secure bridge to tomorrow.  Since the transition from Explorer program to the more robust LAPD Cadet Program, participation has grown dramatically from 457 members to over 4,600 active participants today – all under the age of 20.  Because of this explosive growth, the demand to broaden the scope of the program has increased exponentially.  With the generous support of the Ray Charles Foundation, the LAPD has dramatically expanded the program to reach even more young people – as well as their parents, who often come from underserved and at-risk environments in their search for a brighter future.
