Q & A with Ms. Rikki Klieman

You have been active in community work starting with your early days of raising money for the City of Hope, City Meals on Wheels, and Also helping those in need like children, families, and the elderly. What made you decide to sponsor the LAPD Womans Running Team? It seems like a different turn from the charities that you have done for the children, families, and the elderly.

--I learned about this year’s Women’s Running Team when I received a letter that money I had donated to the team a few years ago by selling books at the Women’s Leadership Conference was going to be used to support this year’s team.  I was thrilled!

How were you introduced to the Woman’s Running Team?

--I am a strong supporter of women themselves, women’s groups, and women’s team efforts.  As a child of the 60’s, I was part of the women’s movement and saw that I could help other women achieve their own destiny.  I have lectured to women around the country about issues of communication and power, magnificent motivation, and life in balance.  Any time I can touch the life of a woman and support her goals, I have received a gift far greater than any I give.

What abilities does the LAPD Womans Running team have that impresses you the most?

--I was a dancer from age 4-24. When I left the theatre world and decided to become a trial lawyer, I started running.  So I have been a runner (more like a jogger) for many decades.  It has wreaked havoc on my knees and my back in later years but it is still worth it.  There is nothing like the feeling of running with the wind – I find that I am transformed.  My last run along the beach in Coronado during the Major City Chiefs Conference was one of the great runs of my life.  I came back to the Del Coronado Hotel with the joy that a magical run can bring.  I thought it was a perfect moment in my life.

When you were young you used to dance, act and sing. Did you express an interest in any other physical activities such as running or any other sports?

--The renewal of the Women’s Running Team this year impresses me with their commitment to join together in the spirit of competition and excellence.  One of the runners is on my husband’s security detail, Yvette Holcombe, and I see how she is relentless in her pursuit.  I admire that quality.

In your book “Fairy Tales Can Come True” you write about the different steps that you took to become who you are today. How do you think the members of the LAPD Womans Running Team can apply what you talk about in your book to their physical fitness goals?

----In my best-selling book, “Fairy Tales Can Come True,” I wrote quite candidly about the difficult steps I took to become the person that I am today, and that journey continues to evolve.  I have always looked at physical fitness goals as mirroring your goals in life.  You follow your passion, you push yourself to the limit, you see your progress, and you know that you have accepted a challenge and conquer it.  I use running as a metaphor in many of my talks to women.  It is truly a symbol of life itself which I believe you should live out loud.

What should the LAPD Womans Running Team expect from themselves in order to accomplish their goal in winning the Baker to Vegas Relay Race under the Womans Category?

--The Women’s Running Team needs to strive for excellence.  They want to be first since they are highly competitive and they may well win it all.  Yet, even if they are not the very first women to win (and I firmly believe they will win), they will know that they have tested themselves, proved themselves and accomplished their personal best.  In addition, they will have the joy and support of team work. Women know how to support each other, from their minds to their hearts and souls.  It is an honor to sponsor them and to be cheering for them.  I cannot wait to be at the Finish Line!
