Los Angeles: In 2001, the Valley Bureau of the Los Angeles Police Department experienced a 19% increase in fatal traffic collisions over the figures for the year 2000. Forty three percent of these fatal traffic collisions were of vehicle vs. pedestrians.
In an effort to reduce the incidence of pedestrian involved traffic collisions, officers from Valley Traffic Division will be conducting a sting operation at two heavily traveled intersections. Officers dressed in plain clothes will be crossing the street at the marked crosswalks at Van Nuys Boulevard and Norris Avenue and Kewen Avenue. Other traffic enforcement officers will be ready to stop and cite motorists who fail to yield to the pedestrians.
Sergeant Bill Justice, Valley Traffic Division, can provide the media with pertinent traffic related figures and statistics. Sergeant Justice can be reached at 818-756-8381.
