Man Points Handgun at Officers Resulting in Officer Involved Shooting NR10286ne

Los Angeles:  Last Thursday evening an officer involved shooting occurred when a gang member on parole refused to drop a gun and then raised it towards officers.

On May 27, 2010, at about 7:40 p.m., officers working Rampart Area’s Gang Enforcement Detail recognized a gang member on parole.  The officers also observed the suspect engage in activity consistent with an illicit drug deal.  Working in full uniform and in a marked black-and-white police vehicle, the officers stopped to investigate.  The suspect now known to be armed with a gun, ran away from the officers.

The officers gave chase and radioed for additional officers, alerting them that the suspect was armed with a gun.

Additional officers responded to the area and encountered the suspect walking on 4th Street towards Parkview Avenue.

The officers exited their vehicle and ordered the suspect to stop.  The suspect was holding a gun in his right hand and pointing it towards the ground.  The officers ordered the suspect to drop the gun.  The suspect did not drop the gun, but instead raised it in the direction of the officers.  An officer involved shooting occurred.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the suspect dead.

The involved officers are Police Officer III Clint Perez, 12 years with the Department and Police Officer II Ryan Nguyen, 12 years and two months with the department.

Force Investigation Division personnel responded and are investigating the officer involved shooting.
