Mission Area Community Police Station
Volunteers of the 3rd Quarter

Retirement usually means that one can sleep in, catch up with family, friends, soap operas, and other leisurely activities that just did not fit in to a hectic working schedule in the past.

This is just not the case for Mission Area's volunteers super-spouses, Roy and Sally Furman. They are the volunteers being recognized for the 3rd Quarter of 2006 for having logged 142 and 140 hours respectively. They both devoted over 30 years in their chosen fields; he with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and she with Bank of America.

Upon retirement, they both realized although they had labored for many years, they missed the interaction with people, and the feeling of fulfillment that comes with a job well done. Hence, they decided to become volunteers.

However, they are not simply volunteers. They take their commitment to what they do very seriously. Incidentally, they have 3 daughters, and a granddaughter and a grandson, who is a student at Los Angeles Baptist High School, where Sally also volunteers. Their dog Peaches keeps watch at home from the couch, until they arrive at home and Roy, the Sofa Sheriff busts her.

Most of their efforts at Mission relate to them assisting the Timekeeping Staff with the often tedious, but critical task of organization of records, and filing. Though that may sound simple enough on the surface, it takes a huge load off of the already busy staff, whose efforts can instead be focused upon maintaining the mountain of paperwork processed by the unit everyday.

The Furmans are very flexible and carry out any task asked of them, from filing to flipping burgers or taking tickets at fund raising events. They do so with "can do' attitudes, humor, warmth and the life experience they have gained working and living together for over 34 years.

They are not just two people who come to Mission every week, but two members of the Mission family. We are blessed to have them. Their efforts are so appreciated, as well as the efforts put forth by many other Mission Volunteers.
