LAPD Northeast Division Unveils Murals Designed and Painted by Local Young Artists

WHAT:
News conference to unveil two community murals in front of the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Northeast Community Police Station

WHEN:
Tuesday, July 26, 2011
10:00 a.m.

WHERE:
LAPD Northeast Community Police Station
3353 San Fernando Road
Los Angeles, Calif. 90065

WHO:
LAPD Deputy Chief Jose Perez, Operations-Central Bureau
LAPD Captain Bill Murphy, Northeast Area Commanding Officer
Mr. Aida Cerda, Director of Youth Violence and Gang Prevention, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

WHY:
The mural is a joint effort between the Adolescent Medicine Division at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the office of City Council President Eric Garcetti and LAPD’s Northeast Community Relations Unit.  The unveiling ceremony will provide an opportunity for local residents, members of the clergy and nearby churches, community organizations and local businesses to acknowledge and support the community pride and artistic expression of some of the high-risk youth who live in Northeast Division’s area.  During the news conference, Heriberto Luna and 14-year-old Pola Lopez, will reveal the 21’x16’ murals designed and painted by more than a dozen young artists.

Some of the key goals for this project were to nurture artistic talent by using art as a way to redirect troubled youth to positive outlets of expression, as well as to help build positive relationships among youth, community and police.

For more information, please contact Sergeant Danny Roman, Northeast Area Community Relations unit at 213-485-2548.
