Narcotics Officer Involved in a Shooting in Southwest Division NRF036-17ma

The officer involved in the below incident has been identified as Police Officer II James Moon, Serial No. 37798.



**The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department's understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**


Los Angeles: On May 25, 2017, around 7:00 p.m., officers assigned to a narcotics unit in Southwest Division were attempting to serve a search warrant at a residence in the 3100 block of South Normandie Avenue As the officers approached the location, two men fled but were detained by officers in the area. There was a third man, later identified as Bernardino Perlera, inside the location armed with a large knife. Inside the location there was an officer-involved-shooting with Perlera.

The man was not struck by gunfire and no officers were injured during this incident. The large knife was recovered by detectives.

Perlera was booked for Assualt with a deadly Weapon on a Police Officer.

LAPD's specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD's policies and procedures. The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office will also review the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether any criminal laws were violated.
