California Values Act (SB 54) by Governor Brown NR17292dm

LAPD Statement on the Signing of the California Values Act (SB 54) by Governor Brown

Los Angeles: The Department welcomes the Governor's signing of the California Values Act (SB-54) which enacts into the law many of the policies and practices the LAPD has used for the past four decades to build community trust and keep communities safe from crime.

The new law takes a balanced approach to address the complex issues surrounding immigration and local law enforcement. The law protects the public by allowing local police officers to vigorously enforce criminal laws while enabling all communities, regardless of immigration status, who have been victimized by crime to help police officers apprehend and prosecute criminal offenders. The law also enables local police to continue working with our federal law enforcement partners to enforce criminal laws involving human trafficking, terrorism, narcotics, child exploitation, and other serious offenses.

"I want to thank Governor Brown and Senator DeLeon for their willingness to work with the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies to make SB 54 a balanced approach to protecting all communities from crime," said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. "The LAPD has reduced crime to historic lows through constitutional policing and building strong partnerships with all our communities, regardless of civil immigration status, and SB 54 strengthens our ability to continue this proven crime fighting strategy."
