The Metropolitan officers involved in the below incident have been identified as Police Officer III Matthew Okubo, Serial No. 35735 and Police Officer III Ramon Soria, Serial No. 39371.

Los Angeles: On January 8, 2018, around 6:00 p.m., officers assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department Metropolitan Division were in the area of Florence Avenue and Main Street. They were in their police vehicle when they saw a vehicle driving erratically. The vehicle drove eastbound on Florence Avenue from Main Street and collided with the rear of another vehicle and then struck a street light pole. The officers drove toward the suspect's vehicle; the suspect pointed a a rifle through an open driver's door window at the officers. At that time; two officers fired their handguns at the suspect. The suspect was struck by gunfire.
Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded and determined the suspect was dead. A loaded rifle was recovered at the scene. The occupants of the vehicle struck by the suspect complained of minor pain and none were transported to the hospital. No officers were injured.

The suspect has been identified as 46-year-old Primitivo Rodriguez Macias.

LAPD's specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General responded and monitored the scene investigation.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with the LAPD's policies and procedures. Additionally, representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office who responded to the scene will review the subsequent FID investigation; evidence collected and witness statements to determine if the force used by the officer(s) was reasonable.
