North Hollywood Homicide Detectives Investigate Murder

February 3, 2003

Los Angeles: On February 1, 2003, at approximately 11:30 p.m., North Hollywood Area officers responded to an "Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Shots Fired" call in the 6600 block of Tujunga Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were directed to a vacant field to the rear of a residence where a party had been in progress. Officers then discovered the victim, 17 year-old Sergio Gutierrez, from North Hollywood, lying in the field suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. He was transported by ambulance to Providence Holy Cross Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.
The investigation has revealed that during the party, two male Hispanics approached the partygoers and both suspects were carrying semi-automatic handguns. They fired multiple shots at the victim for no apparent reason and fled the location on foot northbound Kraft Avenue toward Vanowen Street.
The motive for this shooting is possibly gang related.
