Teen Killed in Hit and Run Collision NR10497cj

Los Angeles:  Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), South Traffic Traffic Division Detectives are investigating a fatal hit and run collision that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Los Angeles resident.

On October 23, 2010, at approximately 3:30 a.m. LAPD South Traffic officers responded to a call of a traffic collision in the area of 75th Street and McKinley Avenue.  When officers arrived, they observed a man inside of his 1996 Toyota Corolla who was unresponsive appeared to be suffering from injuries resulting from a collision. The officers also discovered a 2009 Lexus IS 250 that appeared to have collided with the unresponsive man’s car.  The Lexus appeared to have been abandoned.  

Los Angeles City Rescue personnel responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene of the incident.

The man in the car was identified as Daniel Torro.  Officers conducted a search and found 20-year-old Gilberto Garcia with his passenger nearby, and detained them.

Detectives’ investigation revealed that Garcia was the driver of the Lexus.  He was driving eastbound on 75th Street toward McKinley Avenue, when he failed to stop for a posted stop sign.  He collided with Torro’s car, which was traveling southbound on Mckinley Avenue toward 75th Street.  The impact of the collision caused the death of Torro.  Garcia exited his car along with his passenger, failing to identify himself or render aid to Torro.

Garcia was arrested and booked 191.5 PC, Gross Vehicular Manslaughter.
