email Captain Alex Vargas was
born and raised in the City of Los Angeles. He is the third of six
children and the first college graduate in his family. Alex has
been married for nearly 15 years and has two children. Alex
graduated from California State University, Los Angeles in June
1991, with a degree in Social Science. He was also a member of Phi
Sigma Kappa fraternity while at Cal State, LA.

After graduating from college, Alex was employed with the Los
Angeles Police Department (LAPD), where he has worked for over
twenty-three years. Previously Alex held the rank of Lieutenant II
and was assigned as the Commanding Officer for Southwest Detective
Division. As an officer with the LAPD, Alex has worked many
different assignments, including patrol in Central, Van Nuys,
Hollywood, 77th Street and Hollenbeck Divisions. Specialized units
in Van Nuys Vice, Hollenbeck GED, Newton CLEAR and Southwest GIT.
Geographic detectives in Southeast and Southwest. Internal Affairs
at Valley and Central Admin Sections.

Alex has been involved with the Cal State, LA Mentoring Program for
the past seven years. He has also mentored numerous less tenured
police officers and supervisors within the LAPD for the past twelve
years. Alex has a strong passion for mentoring and developing
individuals interested in criminal justice. Alex recently was
promoted to the rank of Captain I and is the new Commanding Officer
at Olympic Patrol Division.
