The Board of Police Commissioners is authorized to appoint a temporary Chief of Police during a vacancy in the office and pending the regular appointment of a Chief of Police. The person appointed as temporary Chief of Police shall be entitled to compensation appropriate to the position of Chief of Police for the duration of the appointment. The length of the temporary appointment shall not exceed 12 months and shall terminate when a regular appointment is made. The appointment of a temporary Chief of Police shall terminate the authority of an Acting Chief of Police.
