Downey: An Off-duty LAPD Officer was confronted by burglars at his home resulting in an officer involved shooting.

On January 30, 2017, around 1:00 a.m., Downey Police responded to an emergency call in the 7800 block of Borson Street in the City of Downey. Upon arrival, Downey Police were met by an off-duty LAPD officer who stated he was confronted by two burglary suspects inside of his residence. The two male Hispanic suspects assaulted the off-duty LAPD officer, striking him multiple times in the head. At some point the struggle with the suspects continued outside where the off-duty officer fired his weapon striking both suspects. One suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and the other to his foot. The officer sustained injuries to his head from being assaulted by the suspects.

The two suspects were transported to local hospitals where they received treatment for their non-life threatening injuries. The off-duty officer was also transported to a hospital where he was treated and later released for the trauma to his head.

The Downey Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation to determine the circumstances that led up to the officer involved shooting. The Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division also responded to the scene and they will conduct the administrative investigation related to the off-duty officer involved shooting. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD's policies and procedures.
