The Los Angeles Police Department is concerned about the rising tide of violent crime involving young people within our communities. While law enforcement remains the main function of the Department, the Chief of Police recognizes there is more to be gained from activities which alleviate circumstances, wherever possible, that eventually lead to criminal activities. Because LAPD is a member of the community, the Chief believes the Department must do everything within its power to help redirect the energy of our young people away from violence and towards more positive, hopeful images for themselves and their futures.
In working to that end, the Department is developing and implementing a campaign to Stop the Violence. The Campaign is focusing on three goals. They are:
- Reduce the number of young people involved with violent crimes/homicides.
- Assist young people with the development of strong moral characters.
- Teach young people to have a high regard for human life.
The Department seeks to do this by collaborating with other government agencies, community organizations, and individual community members. The Department believes that by working together as a community, Los Angeles conveys it’s care and concern for each and every young person and recognizes the value of their lives.
This is a living document based on a continually evolving process.
