WHY: The LAPD Rampart Community Relations Office and Police Activities League (P.A.L.) Program have implemented the first Teen CERT Training for the Rampart Cadet Program.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept was developed and implemented in 1985. This training program will increase the Rampart youths’ ability to safely help themselves, their family and their neighbors during an emergency.

The US Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) adopted and expanded the CERT materials believing them applicable to all hazards. In 1993 this training was made available nationally by FEMA.

All graduating participants have dedicated themselves to learn basic skills in fire, safety, search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. The new graduating CERT Rampart Cadets will be trained to assist others in their neighborhoods or workplace after an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

VISUALS: The media will be allowed to capture the disaster simulation exercises. LAPD officers and LAFD and Red Cross representatives will be available to answer any questions.
