Los Angeles: Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Rampart Division are investigating a case where a man was the victim of an apparent carjacking and reportedly run over by his own vehicle.

On Monday, December 11, 2017, at 6:25 p.m., Rampart Area officers responded to a radio call of an “Assault with a Deadly Weapon” in the 600 block of Carondelet Street. When the officers arrived to the location, they discovered a 54-year-old male Hispanic laying on a rooftop level of a parking structure suffering from severe head and body trauma. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the location and after providing medical treatment, pronounced the victim dead due to his wounds.

LAPD Rampart Division Homicide Detectives were notified and responded to the scene.

As the investigation continued, investigators learned the victim was at his vehicle parked on the rooftop level. Information from witnesses indicated the victim was involved in an argument and physical confrontation with another male subject. A video surveillance camera captured a male Hispanic driving the victim’s vehicle from the scene shortly after the reported fight.

Information about the victim’s vehicle was broadcasted by investigators to law enforcement agencies. At approximately 9:00 p.m., the vehicle was located by LAPD officers in the San Fernando Valley. A suspect observed removing items from the vehicle was immediately detained.

The subject was identified as Mitchell Castillo, a 36 year-old male Hispanic. Castillo has several addresses in and around Los Angeles and appears to be a transient. Castillo was arrested and booked for Carjacking.
