South Traffic Division Supervisor of the Year -- Sergeant Gomez

SOUTH TRAFFIC DIVISION
SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR

Sergeant I+2 Arturo Gomez, Serial No. 26300, South Traffic Division (STD) has been selected for the distinguished award of  “Supervisor of the Year 2007.”  He was selected for this award by the men and women assigned to STD because of his demonstrated leadership skills, his hard work, and the care and concern that he has shown for both his coworkers and people in the community. He is a consummate professional that gives of himself to ensure the wellbeing of others.

Sergeant Gomez was 25 years old when he joined the Department and he is a 19-year veteran.  His assignments included Central Patrol Division, Central Traffic Division (CTD) as a Collision Investigation Officer, Support Services Bureau as a Staff Researcher, Foothill Division, Personnel Division (Background Investigator), Hollywood Patrol Division, Rampart Patrol Division, 77th Street Division as a Vice Officer, CTD Traffic Enforcement Officer, Management Service Division as an Orders Writer, West Valley Patrol Division Supervisor, Northeast Area OIC Special Enforcement Detail and STD Traffic Enforcement Supervisor.

In 1999 Sergeant Gomez was elected as the president for the Latin American Law Enforcement Association (LALEY). As the president of LALEY Sergeant Gomez’ mission was to develop and enhance the effectiveness of all LAPD employees and to improve the Department’s relationship with the community.  He spearheaded the quest to obtain college reimbursement funds in an effort to benefit all law enforcement agencies as well as the LAPD.  This was accomplished by presenting a united front to the Los Angeles City Council, which ultimately relented to LALEY’s efforts to gain college reimbursement for LAPD employees.

Sergeant Gomez’ tenacious work throughout the year with his Crime Task Force (CTF)/Driving Under the Influence (DUI) unit has proven to be an invaluable asset in South Bureau.  His unit provided a resource that was readily available for immediate deployment to address crime problems throughout South Bureau and is being credited with making a significant impact in the reduction of violent crime for the year 2007.  This was not an easy task for Sergeant Gomez as his unit was required to work weekends, change days off, change hours of operation and often work extended hours.  The quality of his work and the productivity of his unit were assured as Sergeant Gomez held his subordinates accountable with his no-nonsense style of leadership.

Sergeant Gomez grew up in the Lincoln Heights area.  He has worked in his family owned store for many years.  He graduated from Alhambra High School in 1981.  He is currently attending the University of Phoenix and is 12 units away from obtaining his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Management.  He continues to work in his family’s business, which has been a fixture in his community for more than 47 years.

Sergeant Gomez and his wife, Diana, have been married for 24 years with two children.  His daughter Monet is 23 years old and is about to graduate from Mount Saint Mary’s College with a degree in nursing.  His son Andres is 18 years old and will be graduating from high school this year. Sergeant Gomez’ hobbies are landscaping dabbling as an investor in real estate, buying and selling properties.

The STD family is fortunate to have Sergeant Gomez and his positive attitude.  His daily commitment to ensure the effectiveness of his unit and to provide quality service to the community demonstrates his deserving of the recognition of Supervisor of the Year for 2007.  We are thankful to have a leader and a supervisor such as Sergeant Gomez.
