"Mother Arrested in Connection With Daughter Death"
 

Los Angeles: October 23, 2002, at approximately 7:20 p.m., a two-year old girl was taken to USC Medical Center via Rescue Ambulance with third degree scald burns to 80 percent of her body. She was admitted to the burn ward and remained in critical condition until she died on October 27, 2002 at 10:04 a.m.
On October 28, 2002, detectives from the Abused Child Unit were notified of the death and responded to the 700 block of 27th Street to conduct the investigation. It was determined that the mother, Maria Sebastian, age 26, fell asleep while water was boiling on the stove. According to the mother, she was awakened by the child’s screams and found the child on the floor, burned by the water that had been boiling on the stove. On October 29, 2002, Maria Sebastian was arrested and booked for Felony Child Endangering.
On November 1, 2002, the District Attorney’s Office filed one count of 273 (A) PC, Felony Child Endangering. She is being held on $80,000.00 bail.
Five other children, ages 10 days to seven years, were placed in foster care by the Department of Children and Family Services.
