Captain James A. Miller was born in Burbank, California in 1954. He grew up in Van Nuys and graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1971. He received his Associate of Arts Degree in the Administration of Justice from Los Angeles Valley College. He is also a graduate of the United States Air Force Air University Squadron Officer’s School, and Air Command and Staff College.
Captain Miller began his career in law enforcement with the Los Angeles Police Department as a Crime Prevention Assistant in November 1975 with assignments in Northeast and Rampart Areas. He was appointed as a Police Officer in February 1977. As a Police Officer he worked Foothill Patrol Division, Communications Division and West Los Angeles Patrol and Detective Divisions. He was promoted to Detective in July 1984 and assigned to Detective Headquarters Division. In January 1987 he was promoted to Sergeant and worked North Hollywood Patrol Division, 77th Street Patrol Division, Internal Affairs Division and Operations-Headquarters Bureau. In October 1994 he reverted to Detective and returned to Internal Affairs Division. He promoted to Lieutenant in January 1995 and had assignments in West Traffic Division, Wilshire Detective Division, Transit Bus Division and Operations-West Bureau. Upon his promotion to Captain in September 1998 he was assigned as the Commanding Officer, Pacific Operations Support Division. In April of 2000 Captain Miller was assigned as the Commanding Officer, West Traffic Division. On December 31, 2000 Captain Miller was assigned as the Area Commanding Officer, 77th Street Community Police Station. He is currently the Commanding Officer at Van Nuys Community Police Station. Captain Miller has held every rank and paygrade from Police Officer I through Captain III. In 1981 Captain Miller was awarded the Police Star for rescuing an attempt suicide victim from a 100 foot tall construction crane.
As the Commanding Officer of Van Nuys Community Police Station, Captain Miller oversees all of the law enforcement activities in the Area including Patrol, Detective, Gang, Vice and Community Relations Units. Officers under his command are responsible for all law enforcement activities within Van Nuys Area. Over three hundred and seventy-five civilian and sworn personnel are under his command.
Captain Miller is a resident of Granada Hills, California, where he lives with his wife and two children. Captain Miller is actively involved in the San Fernando Valley community. He volunteers his time as a First Aid and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross. He has provided instruction in life saving techniques to over 1700 people in the past fifteen years. Captain Miller’s support of youth activities includes service as an adult leader with the Girl Scouts of America. In this role he supports the activities of a Senior Girl Scout Troop. An avid aviator, he has been a member of the Civil Air Patrol, a civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force, for over thirty years. His activities with the Civil Air Patrol include working with their Cadet Program, which provides young people, between 11 and 21 years of age, with training in leadership, aerospace education and physical fitness. |
