As the Fall season begins, Wilshire Community Police Station personnel request your continued community policing partnerships in discussing and implementing public and traffic safety and homeland security strategies throughout business and residential neighborhoods. During these fall months, it is imperative that community members remain aware of neighborhood activities. Furthermore, with schools back in session and Halloween approaching, please remain cognizant of the presence of children throughout the community and especially, around neighborhoods where schools are located. Your attention to their presence will help ensure their safety and welfare.
Business and residential community residents and Wilshire Station’s Senior Lead Officers have work together to develop Wilshire Station’s 2008 Halloween Safety Plan. The entire community is encouraged and invited to attend various activities throughout our neighborhoods, including the Wilshire Station’s Halloween Carnival at Pan Pacific Park and the Haunted House on Washington Boulevard at 10th Avenue. These events are outstanding opportunities for community members and Department personnel to interact and further develop community policing partnerships and crime reduction strategies. Furthermore, these activities provide alternatives for the youth of our community to attend and participate, thus assisting in the Department’s gang and narcotics intervention.
As of October 1st, our 2008 community policing partnerships have been extremely effective and successful in reducing 2008 Part I Crime in comparison to 2007 Part I Crime by a minus five percent, including reductions in Property Crime of six percent. Specifically, we have successfully decreased the following 2008 Part I Crimes: Aggravated Assaults -20%, Burglary -5%, Child/Spouse Abuse -19%, Burglary Theft from Vehicle -9%, Rape -43% and Theft -8%.
The community is reminded to remain aware of their activities and suspicious people and vehicles. Please continue your community policing efforts in reminding everyone to remain alert to suspicious circumstances and reminding others to lock and secure their residences and vehicles when away. This will assist in ensuring the public safety and welfare of those that live, visit and work in the Wilshire community. Additional crime prevention information addressing Part I Crime is available on the Department’s internet site, www.lapdonline.org or by telephoning the Wilshire Station’s Community Relations Unit, at 213-473-0558, Sergeant AJ Kirby or Police Officer Gregg Webber.
Community members are urged to immediately report suspicious circumstances, objects, and people to the Police Department. Should you observe any possible illegal activity, it is recommended you safely record pertinent information and then report it to the police. In case of an emergency, please telephone “9-1-1.” For non-emergency service, please telephone the Department's Communications Center at (877) ASK-LAPD or the Wilshire Community Police Station's Front Desk at 213-473-0476 for any questions/concerns or to make a police report. The City of Los Angeles has also established a “3-1-1” system for all non-emergency City services, including non-emergency police service requests. This system is a valuable resource designed to ease the burden on the “9-1-1” system.
To further the Department’s public safety efforts, the E-Policing Program has been initiated and has continued to provide our business and residential community with information pertaining to crime activity and trends throughout their neighborhoods. Wilshire Area personnel can e-mail important information to business and residential community members based on where they live.
E-Policing starts with community members signing-up through the Internet at the following URL, www.lapdepolicing.org. Upon submission, the E-Police tool will identify the subscriber’s LAPD Station, Basic Car and Reporting District (RD) based on street address. Each LAPD Station will build a growing list of subscribers within its area, with which it can target communication based on the Station, Basic Car, RD, or by a custom “mail group” created to reach select subscribers.
Due to our community policing partnerships and problem solving efforts, a significant number of criminals have been captured while in the progress of committing crimes. However, we must continue to improve the effectiveness of our Business and Neighborhood Watches and work together to make Wilshire Area safer. If you are interested in becoming involved with our community policing activities, partnerships, and programs, or wish to serve as a Wilshire Station volunteer, please contact Sergeant A.J. Kirby, Community Relations Office, at 213-473-0558.

IDENTITY THEFT
There is a rapidly growing number of victims of identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission logged 161,819 complaints of identity theft last year. That was nearly double the number of complaints from 2001 and makes identity theft the fastest-growing financial crime in the nation.
In identity theft cases, con artists use a victim’s personal and financial information (bank and credit card account numbers, Social Security Number and so forth) to apply for credit, drain bank accounts and even buy houses.
What should you do if you are a victim of identity theft?
File a crime report with your local police department.
Call the Federal Trade Commission’s identity theft hotline: 877-438-4338
Report the fraud to any one of the major credit bureaus:
Expect to receive copies of your credit reports within a week. Immediately review the reports for inaccurate or fraudulent items. Continue to monitor your credit report regularly. For further advice, call the Visa Call for Action Hotline: 866-434-6854

Crime Update
The Departments goal for 2008 is a 5% reduction in Part 1 crimes compared to 2007. Basic Car 7A55 has an increase in crime compared to the same time in 2007. Burglary from motor vehicles is our number one crime problem in the area. Please continue to keep an eye out for suspicious persons in the area and around vehicles parked on the street. Please report all transient camps or people sleeping or living in their vehicles. Please remember to report all suspicious activity and report crimes to the police. When a criminal is caught in the act, we can tie him to other crimes. If we have no reports on file, there is no way to connect that person to a crime. Robberies are down in our area with only about one robbery occurring a week. Please avoid walking alone and also don’t walk while using your cell phone or IPODS. These items are often taken in street robberies and could cause you to become a target.
Crime Prevention Tips
If you have crime problems or quality of life issues in your neighborhood, beside the police department, there are various resources available to you. Report trash and bulky item pick up to (800) 996-CITY. Cleaning up the community is an ongoing process that will impact crime and prevent your neighborhood from becoming a breeding ground for criminals. We need to send a message to criminals that your community cares about maintaining a clean and peaceful environment. When the criminal element sees a clean environment, they will think twice about committing crime in that community. The main reason is the fear of getting caught in the act by a community that cares and will report them to the police.
Lastly, if you are interested in starting a Neighborhood or Business Watch in basic car 7A55 or would like to know about joining the Wilshire Community Police Advisory Board please call me. The Wilshire Community Police Advisory Board is a diverse group of Wilshire residents or business owners who meet monthly with our commanding officer to address police or quality of life problems and receive crime alert information that may be of interest to you. Wilshire is continually looking for interested people to join and work in partnership with the police department.
If you have a crime or quality of life problem in your community, please call me on my city cell phone at 213-793-0789. I will assist you in any way possible.

Residential burglaries continue to be my greatest challenge. Please lock all doors and windows of your residence when you leave your home. It is even a good idea to lock your doors when you are at home. Lock all gates and garages. Most important thing is to watch out for your neighbors.
Join the e-policing family from your home or office at www.lapdepolicing.org. This will give you real-time neighborhood specific crime alerts and information. Get news and notices concerning your community. This is for basic car 7A73 only that will have the mentioned bounties above.
