Detectives seek witnesses on the shooting death of a 28 year-old man NR14381lp

Los Angeles:  Los Angeles Police Department Criminal Gang Homicide detectives are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that can connect the suspects to the shooting that killed 28-year-old Donald Champmen.

On October 12, 2014, around 12:21 p.m., two suspects were driving near the intersection of 81st street and Avalon Boulevard when one of the suspects exited the car, approached Champmen and shot him. A group of citizens near the area chased the first suspect as he ran away from the location. The good Samaritans detained the suspect until police arrived and took him into custody. Other witnesses saw the suspect vehicle and identified the driver as an additional suspect. Officers took the driver of the vehicle into custody. During the investigation, all of the citizens that apprehended the first suspect and identified the second suspect left the scene before giving their statements.

The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported Champmen to a local area hospital where he died due to his injuries.

Marcus Smith, a 21 year-old Black male was arrested for 187 PC Murder with a bail set for $1,000,000. The second suspect, a 31 year old Black male was questioned and released.
