Domestic Violence Awareness Month Symposium

Los Angeles – The month of October 2000, has been designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the United States. One out of every four women in this country will suffer some kind of violence at the hands of her husband or boyfriend. Very few will tell anyone — not a friend, a relative, a neighbor, or the police. Victims of domestic violence come from all walks of life — all cultures, all income groups, all ages, and all religions. They share feelings of helplessness, isolation, guilt, fear, and shame.

On Tuesday, October 10, 2000, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department’s Northeast Area Community Police Advisory Board will hold a domestic violence symposium, "Healthy Families/Safe Families". This presentation will provide domestic violence information to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend this informative lecture. The presentation will be at the auditorium of Eagle Rock High School, which is located at 1750 Yosemite Drive in Eagle Rock.

The community will hear a panel of experts, including representatives from the District Attorney’s Family Violence Division, YMCA-Glendale Domestic Violence Program and the Northeast Area Domestic Violence Response Team "DART". Representatives will speak on family violence in the Northeast Area of Los Angeles. Discussion and questions will follow the presentation. All residents of the Northeast community are invited to attend this important event. Please bring your teenage sons and daughters so they can begin the process of breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Together we will build stronger families and a stronger community.
