Why:          
To keep the public and the media informed about crime statistics and crime-fighting progress in the City of Los Angeles.  Comparisons will be made primarily between 2008 and 2007, and between 2008 and 2002.  Some comparisons will be made between 2008 and all previous years on record.  Crime data will focus on gang activity and offenses known as Part 1 crimes, which include the most common crimes affecting the public (homicide, robbery, rape, theft, assault with a deadly weapon and more). Members of the media will also have access to the Mayor, the Chief of Police and many of the most influential people in local and federal law enforcement.
