WHY:
In the United States, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic collision every 120 minutes and injured in a traffic crash every 8 minutes.  In the Foothill Area of the San Fernando Valley, there has been a 33% increase in pedestrian related traffic collisions during the past four weeks and 17 pedestrians have lost their lives as a result of a traffic accident this year.

As part of Valley Traffic Divisions 2010 Pedestrian Crosswalk Safety Campaign, officers will continue to conduct pedestrian crosswalk safety enforcement operations throughout the San Fernando Valley.  Since June, these operations have helped reduce the pedestrian related traffic collisions by 1% when compared to last year. This operation will be conducted in an effort to improve pedestrian safety, change dangerous driver behavior, and improve traffic safety in our communities.

Plainclothes police officers will be crossing Foothill Area streets to ensure motorists yield the right of way to pedestrians.  In addition, traffic enforcement officers will ensure that pedestrians are abiding by the rules of the road.  Motorists who fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians as pedestrians who fail to abide by the rules of the road will be cited.
