LAPD Officer’s Mother Found Shot to Death inside her Home NR122449kr

Today, Robbery Homicide Detectives (RHD) held a news conference to announce the arrest of a suspect in the Cleo Hughes murder.

The Detective’s investigation took a positive turn on July 6, 2012 when they were notified of a positive DNA match, recovered from the crime scene.  The suspect was identified as Barbara Jean Davenport, a niece of Hughes.  An arrest warrant was obtained for Davenport.

On July 11, 2012 Davenport was arrested and booked for 187 (A) Murder.  She is being held on
$1 million bail and is currently housed at Century Regional Detention Center (CRDF)

Los Angeles: A 79-year-old woman and the mother of a Los Angeles Police Department training officer, was found murdered in her home Sunday morning.

On Sunday, June 3, 2012, around 11:45 a.m., an LAPD officer drove to his mother’s house in the 1600 block of West 66th Street to check on her welfare when he was not able to reach her by phone.  Cleo Hughes lived alone so when she failed to answer her son’s telephone calls he went to check on her.  When the son went inside Hughes’ home he found her in the bedroom, shot in the chest.

Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics were called and Hughes was pronounced dead at scene.

Detectives have not identified any suspects in this case.  Robbery appears to be the motive for this murder.
