Burglary Suspect Bitten by LAPD Canine NR13043am

Los Angeles:  A suspect wanted for burglary was bitten by a police dog while hiding in a yard.

On February 6, 2013, around 8:10 a.m., 77th Street Division officers established a perimeter for a burglary suspect on 8th and Madden Avenues, between 59th and 60th Streets.  Police dog (also referred to as “K-9”) resources were requested and LAPD Metropolitan Division officers responded.

Officers went to the rear yard of a home in the 5900 block of Madden Avenue.  The officers included personnel from the LAPD’s 77th Street Parole Compliance Unit.  Numerous advisements and warnings, both in English and in Spanish, were broadcast to the suspect, ordering him to leave the yard.  When he refused, a K-9 made contact with him as he hid behind a detached garage.  The suspect then held and punched the K-9 numerous times.

After the suspect was apprehended, Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was admitted for the treatment of bite wounds to the back of his neck.

LAPD’s Force Investigation Division (FID) has responded to the incident and is investigating the suspect’s K-9 contact, while 77th Street Division detectives are handling the arrest and burglary investigation.
