WHAT:
Day of exceptional and exciting activities for children battling serious illnesses.  The Sunshine Kids will be sworn in as “Honorary LAPD Officers” for the day.

WHY:
To provide special activities for children who are part of the Sunshine Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to children with cancer.  Established in 1982, the organization provides positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients.  This is the eighth consecutive year the Los Angeles Police Department has participated and organized activities for the Sunshine Kids.

The day will start with a ceremony atop the Universal Sheraton Parking structure where the kids will be sworn in as Honorary Police Officers for the day and be provided with Junior Police Officer badges, certificates and gift bags. Then off to Raleigh Studios in a motorcade of police vehicles and motorcycles, traveling “Code-3” (with red lights and sirens.)

Reserve Officer David Bush, the coordinator of the event, says “The Sunshine Kids will never forget the experience of being an Honorary LAPD Officer and the genuine support that the officers show them.”  According to Chief Charlie Beck, “the Sunshine Kids display exceptional bravery, strength and courage. Their daily fight against their illness’ are acts of heroism and we are honored to salute them.”
