Officer-Involved Shooting in Foothill NR14134nv

The officers involved in the below incident have been identified as Police Officers II Oscar Martin and Jacob Wood.

Los Angeles:  On Friday, April 4, 2014, around 4:00 p.m., Foothill Patrol Division officers responded to a radio call of a “Man with Mental Illness, Attempt Suicide with a Knife”, at the 9000 block of Breidt Avenue.

Upon arrival the officers encountered a male Hispanic in his 20’s armed with a knife.  In an attempt to subdue the suspect officers deployed their department approved taser. The suspect appeared unaffected by the taser and ran to a nearby backyard where he confronted officers with a knife, at which time an officer-involved-shooting occurred.  

Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics responded to the location but despite life-saving efforts, the suspect died as a result of his injuries at scene.  No officers were injured.

A knife was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

Los Angeles Police Department Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the incident and will be handling the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, Office of the Inspector General and The Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.  Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.
