Topanga: On Saturday, March 14, 2015 around 4:10 p.m., uniformed patrol officers from Topanga Area responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon at the 6000 block of Myrtle Court. The officers met with the suspect’s father who had a shoulder injury and said the suspect, later identified as Aaron Mahaffey was throwing items out of the house and attacked him with a knife. The officers observed debris in the street and driveway and approached the condominium. Mahaffey then reached out of the window and pointed a handgun at officers, which resulted in an officer involved shooting. Mahaffey refused to exit the residence and Metropolitan Division responded. Mahaffey was eventually taken into custody without further incident. No officers were injured during this incident. The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Departments use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.
