Suspect Assaults Father and Points Gun at Officers NRF022-15jk

Updated: The officers involved in the below incident have been identified as Police Officer II Eric Leon, Serial No. 41020 and Police Officer II Francisco Olazaba, Serial No. 41028.

Topanga: On Saturday, March 14, 2015 around 4:10 p.m., uniformed patrol officers from Topanga Area responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon at the 6000 block of Myrtle Court. The officers met with the suspect’s father who had a shoulder injury and said the suspect, later identified as Aaron Mahaffey was throwing items out of the house and attacked him with a knife. The officers observed debris in the street and driveway and approached the condominium. Mahaffey then reached out of the window and pointed a handgun at officers, which resulted in an officer involved shooting. Mahaffey refused to exit the residence and Metropolitan Division responded. Mahaffey was eventually taken into custody without further incident. No officers were injured during this incident. Force Investigation Division responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation. The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Departments use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved-shooting.
