Officer-Involved Shooting in Southwest NRF087-15mm

November 5, 2015 UPDATE The officer involved in the below incident has been identified as Police Officer II James Day, Serial No. 39691.

**The following information is based on a preliminary, ongoing investigation which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the incident may change as the investigation continues and additional evidence is collected and analyzed.**

Los Angeles: On October 27, 2015, around 4:30 p.m., officers from Southwest Division patrol conducted a traffic stop to investigate a stolen vehicle in the area of Magnolia Avenue and 27th Street.

The officers got out of their vehicle and observed one male occupant in the vehicle. The suspect got out of his vehicle, armed with a knife and engaged in a verbal altercation with the officers. The altercation became physical when the officers attempted to detain him. The officers and the suspect fell to the ground and fought over the knife. During the altercation, the suspect attempted to remove the officer’s gun from the holster, resulting in an officer-involved shooting (OIS).

The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound and listed in critical condition.

Both officers were transported and treated for abrasions to their arms and multiple cuts. Both officers were released from the hospital. A knife was recovered at the scene.

Los Angeles Police Department Force Investigation Division (FID) detectives responded to the incident and are conducting a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, Office of the Inspector General and The Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division will conduct a comprehensive review of the facts of the officer-involved shooting.
