The officer involved in the below incident has been identified as Police Officer II Ian Chessum, Serial No. 40895.

Los Angeles: Newton Area Gang Enforcement Detail officers responded to a radio call of a man with a gun. They saw a male matching the description of the subject of the radio call. They approached the male, he pointed a handgun at the officers; at which time there was an officer involved shooting.

On Sunday, October 2, 2016, around 4:00 p.m., Newton Area Gang Enforcement Detail officers had received a radio call of a “Man with Gun” in the area of 48th Street and Ascot Avenue. The comments of the radio call described a male dressed in a gray sweater and black pants, armed with a gun. Prior to leaving the area of the radio call officers observed a male, later identified as 16 year-old Daniel Enrique Perez, matching the description provided in the radio call. As officers initiated an investigative pedestrian stop, the passenger officer exited the police vehicle. Perez looked over his shoulder and began to turn toward the officers. The officer saw Perez was holding a handgun and yelled for Perez to drop the handgun. Perez continued to turn toward the officers and pointed a handgun at the officers; at which time the officer involved shooting occurred.

The officers immediately requested Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, who responded to the scene and transported Perez to a local hospital. Perez was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The investigation has revealed the 9-1-1 call which officers were responding to had been placed from the cell phone Perez was in possession of. Additionally, the family of Perez listened to a recording of the 9-1-1 call and identified the voice as that of Perez.

The handgun Perez had pointed at officers was recovered and was a replica handgun with the orange tip altered and colored black to match the handgun.

The Mayor’s Crisis Response Team and our LAPD Family Liaison Section is coordinating with the Perez family.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division is conducting a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting which will be presented to the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force and tactics employed by the officers complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office will also review the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether any criminal laws were violated.
