Officer Involved in a Shooting in Olympic Division NRF004-17ma

**The following information is based on a preliminary, ongoing investigation which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances of the incident may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**

Los Angeles: On January 15, 2017 about 12:25 a.m. Olympic Division officers responded to a radio call in the 1800 block of South Kingsley Drive. The comments of the call stated a male at the residence who suffers from schizophrenia was armed with a knife and had vandalized the home. The person who had called the police stated she was concerned for her safety.

Officers at the location entered the residence and found Raul Pioquinto in one of the bedrooms. The officers gave Pioquinto commands which he did not follow. While armed with a knife and not following the commands of the officers, Pioquinto moved toward the officers. One of the officers fired a Less Lethal Bean Bag round, striking him. Police Officer Steve Kim, Serial No. 40105 fired one round from his handgun, missing Pioquinto.

Pioquinto was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. No officers were injured during the incident. Pioquinto was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer.

This was the third officer-involved-shooting in 2017. In 2016 there were 40 officer-involved-shootings.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division is conducting a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting which will be presented to the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force and tactics employed by the officers complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office will also review the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether any criminal laws were violated.
