LAPD and The City of Hope “BE THE MATCH “Bone Marrow Registration Drive NA17036ti

WHAT: In the month of March, LAPD, in partnership with The City of Hope, will be hosting “Be The Match in March”. Officers and community members will have the opportunity to register to become bone marrow donors.

WHEN: Starts Wednesday March 1, 2017 through March 30, 2017

WHY: You might be the one to save a human life and to help a family in need of your donation! To become a donor, you simply need to fill out a form and swab the inside of your mouth for a genetic sample. Members of the public who are interested in joining the Be The Match registry can also receive a swab kit through the mail via www.bethematch.org.

Although 14.5 million Americans are registered as potential bone marrow stem cell donors, only a portion of those donors are Latino, African American, Asian or multi-racial. For instance, nine percent of potential bone marrow donors are Latino, six percent are African American and Asian, one percent are American Indian/Alaska Native, and four percent are multi-racial. This makes it more difficult for patients of these ethnicities to find donors. As a result, people in these ethnic groups are particularly needed.
