Fatal Hit and Run Traffic Collision Captured on Video NR17130lp

Los Angeles: Detectives from the
Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division are asking
for the public’s help in providing any information that would lead
to the identification and arrest of the suspect involved in a hit
and run collision that killed 29-year-old Mario Enrique
Cortez-Cua.

On April 28, 2017, around 11:30 p.m., a pedestrian,
later identified as Mario Enrique Cortez-Cua, was crossing
eastbound on Normandie Avenue south of 67th Street. He was hit by a
newer model Blue Volkswagen Jetta. The speeding vehicle stopped
after hitting Cortez-Cua and the driver, a Black female, got out of
the car. The driver walked over to the victim and began saying, “oh
my god, oh my god!” The driver walked back to her vehicle and fled
the location at a high rate of speed failing to render aide to the
victim.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene. Mr.
Cortez-Cua died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

The suspect is described as a female Black.
The suspect’s vehicle is described as a blue, 4 door, newer model
Volkswagen Jetta. The vehicle had paper plates.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles
Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust
Fund. A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members
who provide information leading to the offender’s identification,
apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil
compromise.
