Los Angeles: On May 29, 2017, around 1:50 a.m., an off duty Los Angeles Police Department police officer was leaving a party in the area of Gassen Place and Avenue 33 in Northeast Area. The officer was standing near the roadway when he saw three to four male Hispanics armed with handguns in the intersection. They walked in the direction of several individuals who had left the party and were standing on the corner and began shooting at them. At that time, there was an officer involved shooting.
A male who was standing in the group was shot in the leg and transported to a local hospital. The officer was not injured. The suspects fled the scene. There was no evidence located which indicated the suspects had been shot. There was evidence at scene which investigators believe indicates the suspects were armed with two different handguns, although the handguns themselves were not found at the scene.
LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office will also review the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether any criminal laws were violated.
