School Shooting Ends with Suspect in Custody NR18036cr

UPDATE:February 2, 2018 Today detectives have released information related to the shooting at Sal Castro Middle School on February 1, 2018. While the investigation is still active and evolving, detectives do believe that the handgun was inside a backpack at the times it was fired. Additionally, it appears the bullet went through the wrist of one student and struck a second student in the head. The case has been presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the charges the subject will ultimately face will be determined by their review of the evidence. The juvenile suspect in this case was transported to the Los Angeles County Central Juvenile Hall (Eastlake) and booked for Negligent Discharge of a Firearm (602WIC/246.3PC of the California Penal Code). This continues to be an active investigation. However, at this time, the information suggest that this was an isolated incident, involving the negligent discharge of a firearm, where innocent children and a staff member were unfortunately injured.

Los Angeles: Early this morning, at about 8:55 a.m., first responders from the Los Angeles School Police, Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW) Shooting call at the Sal Castro Middle School located at the 1500 block of West 2nd Street in the City of Los Angeles.

Upon their arrival, they located the students who were victims of the shooting, and transported them to a local hospital for immediate medical treatment. The shooting suspect (a 12-year-old female) student was detained at scene without incident and a semi-auto handgun was recovered.

In all, a total of five individuals were hurt during this incident, who ranged between the ages of 11 through 30 and were listed in the following conditions. One 15-year-old male student sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was listed in critical but stable condition, a second 15-year old female student sustained a gunshot wound to her arm, and was listed in stable condition, a third 11-year old male student, a fourth 12-year old female student and 30-year old female staff person sustained minor superficial face & head injuries and were listed in fair condition.

Due to the serious nature and circumstance of this crime, the Los Angeles Police Department, Rampart Detectives will lead this investigation with the assistance of the Los Angeles School Police Department.
