Why: Through Our Eyes is an innovative series of workshops developed by teen leaders from Legacy LA to address the tensions they saw between teens and law enforcement in their community. Each 2.5-hour workshop is conducted by trained Legacy LA youth leaders with LAPD Community Safety Partnership police officers, helping both sides understand how each side feels. At the close of the workshops teens living in the local public housing developments and officers serving their communities identify a public safety issue that they would like to work on together.
Working side-by-side, their chosen project provides an opportunity for teens and officers to build strong relationships and communication, as well as improve community safety. Community projects include: the need for a stop sign to improve pedestrian safety, a petition to conduct traffic studies on a busy street used to reach a local park, teen driver safety, street crossing safety projects, adding lighting to an under-utilized play area in the community, and creation of community murals to reduce graffiti, among others.
State Farm is “thrilled to support the Through our Eyes program. Supporting safer and stronger communities through education aligns with our organizational values. Through our Eyes is about relationships and mutual trust which is the core of this collaborative partnership,” said Zack Rabadi, Agency Leader at State Farm.
