Los Angeles: Today during the meeting of the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners two women were arrested for battery on a police officer.
On May 8, 2018 around 10:15 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department Chief of Police Charlie Beck was at the Board of Police Commissioners meeting at LAPD Headquarters. Sheila Brim and Melina Abdullah attended the meeting. Brim stood from her seat, moved in the direction of Chief Beck and threw an unknown substance at Chief Beck. A portion of the substance landed on Chief Beck. Brim was detained and direction was given to have the room cleared. Prior to the room being cleared, Abdullah assaulted a police officer and was detained. Both women were booked for battery on a police officer with a bail amount of $20,000.
After the room was cleared, specially trained LAPD and LAFD HAZMAT personnel responded to test the material. The material was found to be non-hazardous. It was collected and booked as evidence. Chief Beck was seen by medical personnel at LAPD Headquarters and did not require medical treatment.
“Today’s assault was not only disrespectful to the Office of the Chief of Police, but more importantly to a process of community engagement that has been recognized across the nation.” Chief Beck went on to say, “Our Police Commission is the model for civilian oversight in every major city across the country, and is designed to invite productive discourse in a public setting. This only created chaos and fear for any Angelinos who wanted to voice their opinion about policing in our city.”
Robbery Homicide Division is continuing their investigation and anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about this case is asked to contact them at (213)486-6850. The cases will be presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
